Demolition

Boise Cascade Corporation
315 Commercial St SE
Salem, OR

I've always wondered what the inside of the former pulp and paper mill looked like. It looks just as I imagined...as bad as the stench that used to emanate from it.

A shot I wouldn't even have thought of taking but the result is (surprisingly?) good! Good thing blogger doesn't come with smell!

But at least they're cleaning it up now :) I wonder what will go on this site next?

I remember traveling thru S.E. Georgia years ago. They were loaded with paper mills. You could smell it for 20 miles in each direction. Fortunately, they cleaned them up and are fine now.

Hopefully they don't replace it with a meat packing plant. One of the other unbelievable smells we have to drive by now and then.
P.S. Ciel is right. I'm glad we don't have smell-o-vision.

Speaking of pulp smells, you probably remember the Wauna mill near Astoria. Ugh! As for our bridge being terrifying, you must not like heights? There is an amazing story. When I first got to town, I'd been to have a blood draw done at the hospital lab, and I'd chatted with the receptionist and noted her name. When I looked at the newspaper a week or so later, the headline story was about a woman who had driven off that bridge (on the lower part of the bridge!). People die in this water every year. This must have been her lucky as well as unlucky day, because a woman contractor was just behind her, stopped and threw bales of shingles into the river. The woman in the water somehow got herself out of the car AND managed to grab a bale of shingles AND the rescue team got there before she died of cold. I could not believe this story, but I saw her again at work. It sound like a made-up tale. Now you probably will never drive on our bridge - sorry about that! I tried Googling the story and couldn't find it. Too much stuff came up with my search words.
