Return to Grandeur

The Historic Elsinore Theater
170 High St SE
Salem, OR 97301
Originally opened to the public in 1926, the theater was nearly leveled in 1980 to make way for a parking lot. Thanks to the 'Save the Elsinore Committee', the site was preserved, renovated and reopened in 2004. Tonight I watched the classic 1927 silent movie, "Metropolis" accompanied by live Wurlitzer organ music.

Snowy Salem Saturday Scene

Downtown Salem, OR
As you can see, no skyrise buildings in Salem. As a matter of fact. the top of the steeple in the background makes Salem First United Methodist Church the tallest building at 188 ft. The Capitol Building, the landmark just left of the steeple, is the runner up at 173 ft.

Rain, Rain Go Away

Wallace Marine Park
200 Glen Creek Road NW
Salem, OR

It turned out to be a pretty soggy day. I still managed, though, to walk through a couple of the city's largest parks, Riverfront and Wallace Marine Park and collect a few images to post. This fallen leaf was wedged on one of the fenced areas separating the many fields of the Softball Complex. During drier months, you can catch a softball tournament just about every weekend. This time of year the players are replaced by grazing geese, south for the winter.

Dia de los Muertos isn't until November 1 - 2, but my family has been hit with the flu bug and today, for my household, it was quite literally, the day of the walking dead. I'm hoping tomorrow brings a healthier day.

Trinity Ballroom

Reed Opera House
189 Liberty Street NE
Salem, OR 97301
I've been fortunate enough to attend a few events in this ballroom, on the third floor of one of downtown Salem's oldest buildings. The high ceilings, red bricks, tall arched windows and gold chandeliers create a warm, festive atmosphere. The best aspect of this location is it's high vantage point over the downtown area. The view of Salem out of the windows at night can't be beat.
